STUDENT COUNCIL

ANTHONY FIRMIN
PROJECT MANAGER
REGIONAL SERVICES

On 28 March 2003, Student Council held its Annual General Meeting at Chartered Accountants' Hall, London. Representatives of student societies from around England and Wales applauded the efforts of Helen Macauley and Richard Attwood, the outgoing Chair and Vice Chair (respectively), and welcomed in Lizzy Conder (Southern CASS) as Chair and James White (Leeds CASS) as Vice Chair. Visit the 'student societies' area at www.icaew.co.uk/students for more information on both Lizzy and James and their policies.

Aside of the celebrations, the meeting was highly productive and informative. Student Council agreed a draft operations plan, which will aid in directing its resources effectively to achieve its goals of representing students' views at the Institute, promoting best practice amongst all student societies, and raising the profile of the chartered accountancy profession. The number of Student Council meetings was also increased from two to four times per annum; the next meeting will take place on 27 June 2003.

Feedback from the twelve student societies represented at the meeting was really encouraging; the number of events that student societies are running and the level of attendance at those events during 2002 was reportedly up on 2001. Of the 22 active student societies, 16 (73%) are working with their ICAEW regional office and report the relationship to be highly beneficial. No doubt these relationships will continue to grow and the benefits be passed on to local students.
